Community Visitors Scheme

COMMUNITY VISITORS SCHEME is a Federal Government Initiative - Department of Health & Aged Care.
(Friends for Older People)

The Caboolture Business Enterprise Centre Assoc. Inc. has been the auspicing organisation of the  Caboolture Community Visitors Scheme since 1998.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY VISITORS SCHEME?
The Community Visitors Scheme is part of the Commonwealth Government's initiative to enhance the rights of older people living in residential aged care facilities.

A community visitor befriends a resident of an aged care facility who is considered to be lonely and who would like her or his own special visitor.

WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY VISITORS SCHEME FOR?
  • To improve the quality of life of residents in aged care facilities.
  • To assist residents to maintain their independence.
  • To enhance residents' social contacts
  • To minimise residents' isolation from the general community.

THE PEOPLE YOU WOULD VISIT.
The Community Visitors Scheme is for those people living in aged care facilities who have indicated that they would welcome a visitor.

If you decide to become a community visitor, you will have the support of a community organisation which understands the Scheme and will help you to understand the needs of people living in a nursing home.

Full induction and training will be given.  It is mandatory for all visitors to have a Blue Card and our co-ordinator will assist you in obtaining one, if you do not already have one.

Every effort will be made to ensure that you get as much out of befriending someone as they will get out of your visits.  You might, for example, have a strong interest or long-standing hobby.

It could be anything from gardening or tapestry to Australian Rules Football - CVS will try to match someone to visit who has similar interests.

WHAT DO COMMUNITY VISITORS DO?
As a community visitor; you will be asked to set aside some time each week to visit someone in an aged care facility.  Depending on you, and the person you visit, you may spend this time keeping each other company and having a talk; or you may decide to go on outings to a gallery or a park.....or any number of activities.

Your visits will provide an important link between the resident and the wider community. The effort you expend as a community visitor; sharing your interests and your time, could help an older person in an aged care facility to enjoy life to its full potential.
